As part of effort to preserve the forest Reserves in it’s enclave , the \u202fBui Power Authority\u202f(BPA),\u202fa power generation company\u202fhas expanded its flagship\u202fForest Resources Enhancement Programme\u202f(FREP) to over 1423 acres since 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FREP is being developed to promote reforestation\/afforestation activities and\u202fconserve\u202fforest\/Savannah woodlots within the Black Volta Basin and other BPA Operational areas.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 26 indigenous, economic, medicinal trees species including african, birch baobab, cassia, dawadawa, fig tree, mahogany, ebony, black plum, shea and kapok are being protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of BPA , Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, a Deputy Director, Occupational Health , Safety and Environments, Mr Chrisentus B Kuunifaa, told Journalists at\u202fthe COP 27\u202fConference in\u202fEgypt that the forest programme would help protect the Bui Dam reservoir that was being threatened by increase in temperature \u2013 a climate change impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly referred to as COP27, is the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the rise in temperature by about one degree over decades causes surface water to evaporate rapidly, especially during the dry season but \u201cthe forest vegetation will slow down the rate of evaporation down so there will be water to generate power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kuunifaa said the project would help create\u202fcarbon sinks to\u202fremove \u2018bad air\u2019 and\u202fbuild climate change resilience to improve precipitation and microclimate\u202fthat was tied in to Ghana\u2019s climate plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme, the Deputy Director said would also help\u202fcontrol and protect the reservoir shoreline against soil erosion, siltation, sedimentation and depletion of vegetative cover within the Black Volta basin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that, \u202fBPA\u202fis committed to supporting Ghana to achieve Energy Transition to Net Zero Emission and the Nationally Determined Contributions to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate Crisis , he stressed was undeniable, and that the BPA was embarking on initiatives under it\u202f2020 expanded\u202fmandate\u202fto develop Renewable & Clean Energy Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the initiatives include the\u202f50\u202fMegawatt peak\u202fSolar Plant\u202fwith another 200\u202fMegawatt peak\u202funder installation\u202fat Bui\u202fand\u202fYendi, a\u202f45Kilowatt Micro Hydropower Plant at Tsatsadu-Volta Region\u202f\u202fand a 75 Kilowatt plant to be added later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the\u202fBPA was ready to partner donor Agencies to raise the needed funding to expand the rollout of renewable energy projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
