{"id":9731,"date":"2022-12-22T01:44:12","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T01:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=9731"},"modified":"2022-12-22T01:44:12","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T01:44:12","slug":"sp-downgrades-ghana-to-default-due-to-debt-payment-suspension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=9731","title":{"rendered":"S&#038;P downgrades Ghana to default due to debt payment suspension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Global Ratings agency S&amp;P has downgraded Ghana\u2019s credit ratings to default after the government suspended debt payments, a move that complicates the planned debt restructuring meant to unlock a bailout by the International Monetary Fund.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ghana, which has $13 billion of foreign bonds, was downgraded to selective default from CC due to the moratorium on debt payments, the credit assessor said in a Tuesday statement. The default comes as Ghana suffers from \u201cvery low net reserves, a volatile exchange rate, high inflation and a weakened economy,\u201d according to analysts Frank Gill and Ravi Bhatia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese factors have all limited the sovereign\u2019s capacity to refinance its maturing debt,\u201d the S&amp;P analysts wrote. \u201cWe could raise the long-term ratings following the presentation of restructurings and their acceptance by creditors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ghana caught investors by surprise earlier this week by announcing it would cease payments on its foreign bonds, commercial loans and most bilateral obligations pending an agreement with creditors. While plans for a broad restructuring of foreign and local debt had already been signaled, some expected the government to keep making payments in the interim.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9389\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9389\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/FINANCE-MINISTER-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/FINANCE-MINISTER-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/FINANCE-MINISTER.jpg 564w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ken ofori atta<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>S&amp;P is the first major rating company to declare Ghana\u2019s foreign debt in default. Fitch Ratings and Moody\u2019s Investors Service assign it the second-lowest rating.
