The Rotary Club of Bolgatanga Goodwill has donated 50 dual desks valued at approximately GH¢27,000 to the Zorko Kankom Primary School in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, in response to a severe shortage of furniture at the school.
The intervention is expected to ease the pressure on the school, where inadequate desks had reportedly forced some pupils to sit on the bare floor during lessons.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the President of the Rotary Club of Bolgatanga Goodwill, Alexis Ayamdoo, said the donation followed appeals from members of the Zorko Kankom community and an assessment of the school’s furniture needs.
“Before this, we had received appeals from some community members. We followed up with a community needs assessment and discovered that, based on the school’s enrolment, there were only about 27 dual desks available,” he said.
Mr Ayamdoo said the assessment revealed a significant gap between the number of pupils and the available furniture, leaving some children without desks to support their learning.
“This was not enough, which meant that some of the pupils had to sit on the bare floor to learn,” he added.
He said the findings compelled the Rotary Club to mobilise resources to provide immediate support to the school and improve the learning environment for the pupils.
The 50 dual desks are expected to significantly improve classroom conditions and provide pupils with a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
