Parliament to Launch 2nd Edition of Democracy Cup on July 24
Parliament is set to launch the second edition of the Democracy Cup, a unique football event that blends sports with civic celebration, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
The official unveiling will take place at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium in Parliament House at 3:00 p.m., with the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, expected to lead the ceremony.
Key details of the event—including the participating football clubs, match venue, ticketing information, and side attractions—will be announced during the launch.
The Democracy Cup, introduced in 2024, forms part of Parliament’s innovative efforts to promote Ghana’s democratic culture through football.
The inaugural match, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 17, 2024, featured arch-rivals Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, with Kotoko edging out their rivals in a tightly contested game.
The competition has since been embraced as an annual fixture on Ghana’s national calendar, gaining popularity for its fusion of sporting excitement with the values of democracy—teamwork, fair play, inclusion, and spirited competition.
Organisers say the 2025 edition promises even greater thrills, surprises, and fan engagement, as Parliament builds on the success of the maiden event.
The Democracy Cup is designed not only to entertain but to serve as a powerful reminder of the ideals of democratic governance, civic responsibility, and national cohesion.
By leveraging the universal appeal of football—particularly among the youth—Parliament hopes to foster political tolerance, promote peaceful participation, and inspire unity among citizens across the political divide.
With the involvement of clubs with storied legacies and devoted fan bases, the Democracy Cup continues to grow as a vibrant national tradition celebrating Ghana’s democratic journey through the beautiful game.
