The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been honoured with the Mahatma Gandhi Award for World Unity at the 26th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World (ICCJW) in Lucknow, India.

The award recognizes his exceptional contributions to global peace, governance, and his efforts to protect children affected by war.

In a statement signed by the Director of Media Relations of Parliament, David Damoah said, the organizers of the conference praised Speaker Bagbin’s “unfliching support for world unity, peace, and a safe future for over 2.5 billion children worldwide.”

It said Prof. Sandeep Srivastava, Project Leader of ICCJW, lauded Bagbin as a leader who spreads “love and kindness to nourish children into becoming future leaders.”

Ambassador Jonathan Rexford Magnussen, who accepted the award on Bagbin’s behalf, expressed gratitude and pledged the Speaker’s continued commitment to global unity and peace.

Speaker Bagbin, a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Task Force on the Russia-Ukraine war, is recognized for his influence in international parliamentary affairs.

The ICCJW, addressing global conflicts, climate crises, and governance challenges, emphasized the need for a renewed collective security framework, drawing inspiration from Article 51 of the Indian Constitution.

Other awardees included Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

This honour adds to Speaker Bagbin’s streak of international recognition for his statesmanship and democracy-enhancing efforts.
