Ako Gunn Urges Newly Elected NDC Constituency Executives to Exercise Restraint, Uphold Party Values
Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Ako Gunn, has urged newly elected constituency executives to exercise discipline, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and communicate responsibly to protect the party’s image and strengthen its electoral fortunes.
In a congratulatory message dated October 27, 2026, Mr Gunn wished the newly elected officers a successful and productive tenure, reminding them that leadership requires teamwork, patience and a sustained commitment to the party’s growth.
“Leadership is a four-year marathon, not a sprint,” he said, urging the executives to work together to strengthen the party’s structures and improve its electoral fortunes.
He noted that constituency executives occupy positions of considerable responsibility, adding that their conduct and public statements could influence the party’s reputation.
“As our new ambassadors, you must remember the words of our elders: ‘To whom much is given, much is expected,’” he stated, urging them to abandon practices that could undermine public confidence and instead reflect the values and aspirations of the party.
Gunn cautions executives against reckless public commentary.
Mr Gunn identified effective communication as one of the most important lessons the newly elected executives must learn before beginning their work, stressing that party officials must exercise restraint when commenting on sensitive issues.
He cited the challenges faced by the party’s communicators during the previous week following allegations involving the former Constituency Secretary, noting that the matter attracted considerable public attention because of the position the individual held.
He suggested the incident should remind the new executives of the consequences their words and actions could have for the party.
“Before your orientation, one of the first lessons you must learn is the art of effective communication,” he said.
“Exercise your right to remain silent when necessary and seek clearance before commenting on sensitive matters. Otherwise, anything you say could be used against you and the party.”
He urged the executives to resist the temptation to comment on every issue, explaining that disciplined communication would enable the party to coordinate its responses and prevent unnecessary pressure on its communicators.
Mr Gunn also cautioned against making public statements that could be difficult to defend with facts and figures, emphasising the need for accuracy, consistency and proper coordination in the party’s communication.
Humility in victory, dignity in defeat
Beyond communication, Mr Gunn stressed the importance of emotional intelligence, urging both winners and unsuccessful candidates to conduct themselves in ways that would preserve relationships and strengthen party unity.
He said the ability to celebrate victory with humility and accept defeat with dignity was essential to the party’s long-term success.
“How we conduct ourselves today matters greatly for the sake of tomorrow,” he stated, encouraging party members to remain mindful of their shared responsibilities regardless of the outcomes of the elections.
He described the election weekend as largely successful and called on the newly elected officers to uphold high standards of conduct and accountability.
NDC executives urged to uphold accountability
Mr Gunn maintained that the standards of accountability expected of public officials must equally apply to party executives.

He accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of making attempts to associate the NDC with scandals, arguing that the party’s commitment to good governance and accountability must begin with the conduct of its own members and officers.
“These standards must not apply only to government officials; they must also be upheld by party officials,” he said.
He invoked a local saying, “Sɛ nimɔ entumi wo ara, ɛtiti wo ntima,” to underscore the importance of personal responsibility and the need for individuals to guard against conduct that could bring the party into disrepute.
He urged the newly elected executives to recognise that their actions, both in public and within the party, could influence how the NDC is perceived by the electorate.
Message of hope to unsuccessful candidates
Mr Gunn also encouraged candidates who failed to secure positions in the elections not to withdraw from party activities but to support the new leadership and continue contributing to the NDC’s development.
“To those who could not make it, hold your heads high. Support the newly elected executives with dignity and continue to contribute to the party’s progress,” he said.
“Remember, no door remains permanently closed to anyone. Keep hope alive, for better days lie ahead.”
He, however, congratulated all successful candidates and expressed optimism that collective effort, discipline and unity would help the party strengthen its grassroots structures and secure more seats in future elections.
