Chaos in Kukurantumi as Suspect’s Death Sparks Attack on Police Station
The Ghana Police Service has shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region following violent attacks by angry youth over the death of a suspect in custody.
According to a police statement issued on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the deceased suspect—whose identity was not disclosed—collapsed while in custody and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
News of the death sparked outrage among some youth in the area, who attempted to set the police station ablaze and vandalised parts of the facility. In response, police operations in Kukurantumi have been temporarily relocated to nearby stations.
The statement indicated that investigations are ongoing into both the cause of death and the violent disturbances. It also warned that anyone found responsible for the attempted arson and destruction of property will face prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police has directed the Eastern Regional Command to intensify patrols to restore calm in the community.
During the clashes, two police officers sustained eye injuries after being hit with stones thrown by the rioting crowd. They were treated and discharged at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital. A Toyota Tundra (registration GP 4004) and an official Toyota Hilux belonging to the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander were also damaged.
Reinforcement teams from the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Akyem Tafo Police Division were deployed but faced fierce resistance from the agitated youth.
Speaking to local media, one of the protestors, who requested anonymity, said their actions were driven by frustration and a demand for justice over the suspect’s death.
