The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Mpohor-Fiase, Madam Sophia Aubyn, has highlighted progress in education, water supply, healthcare and women’s empowerment, while acknowledging delays in the district’s 24-hour economy market project.

‎Madam Aubyn made this known when she appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Local Government in Accra on Friday, October 9, 2026, to brief the committee on development projects, revenue mobilisation and challenges facing the Assembly.

She said the Assembly undertook approximately 25 development projects last year, including two legacy projects, with several completed and others at various stages of implementation.

‎According to the DCE, the Assembly has completed mechanised boreholes, 10 hand-pump boreholes and five school projects. Work on two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, however, is about 50 per cent complete.

‎The completed educational facilities include two different six-unit classroom block  and three-unit classroom blocks at separate communities.

Madam Aubyn said the projects were intended to improve access to quality education and essential social amenities across communities in the district.

24-Hour Economy Market Project Delayed

The  DCE identified delays in the construction of the district’s 24-hour economy market as a major challenge, disclosing that the initial contractor had failed to return to the site despite promising to resume work within 14 days.

“The contractor came to the site somewhere in June and promised that he would be back within 14 days. As of today, he has not returned,” she said.

She explained that the Assembly had reported the matter to the project consultants, while the relevant authorities had been engaged to facilitate the appointment of a replacement contractor.

“The first contractor has been terminated, and we have been assured that very soon a new contractor will be brought to the site,” she added.

‎Assembly Collects GH¢1.8m in Revenue

‎On revenue mobilisation, Madam Aubyn said the Assembly had set a revenue target of approximately GH¢2.2 million and collected about GH¢1.8 million by the end of September 2026.

‎She expressed optimism about improving revenue performance but identified poor road conditions and deteriorating operational vehicles as major constraints.

‎According to her, the scattered nature of communities across the district makes revenue collection difficult, while poor roads increase the cost of reaching some areas.

‎“Our vehicles are worn out, and the expenses we incur are eating into the revenue we collect because of the rough roads,” she said.

‎She noted that the Assembly’s vehicles frequently develop faults shortly after repairs and maintenance, placing additional pressure on its limited resources.

‎“If you repair or maintain a vehicle today, it may work for only two days before you have to take it back to the mechanic. That is the major problem we are facing now,” she added.

‎The DCE said improved road infrastructure and reliable vehicles would strengthen revenue mobilisation and enable the Assembly to deliver its development mandate more effectively.

Women Receive Support to Build Livelihoods

Madam Aubyn also highlighted initiatives undertaken by the Assembly in collaboration with the Member of Parliament to equip women with practical skills and improve their economic prospects.

‎She said women in the district had received support in hairdressing and dressmaking, including sewing machines and hairdryers to help them establish or expand their businesses.

‎“Last week, the MP was able to give out some sewing machines, hairdressing equipment and dryers to support the women,” she said.

She added that the Assembly also distributes items donated by philanthropists and other supporters to women as part of efforts to strengthen their livelihoods.

According to the DCE, the initiatives are intended to promote skills development, encourage self-reliance and create opportunities for women to earn sustainable incomes.

Madam Aubyn reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to accelerating development across Mpohor-Fiase, stressing that addressing infrastructure deficits and logistical constraints would be critical to improving project delivery and revenue mobilisation.
