Mahama Launches GH¢1B Bawku Revitalisation Fund to Power Post-Conflict Revival
In a major stride toward breathing new life into northern Ghana’s economy, President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated a five-member committee to manage the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund.
The ambitious initiative is designed to drive massive infrastructure growth and accelerate development priorities across Bawku and its surrounding districts following a period of sustained peace.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the Presidency on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, President Mahama assured the public that the project’s capital is fully secured, clearing the path for immediate execution.
“Funding for the initiative has been secured, paving the way for implementation following significant improvements in the security situation in Bawku,” President Mahama declared.
The creation of the fund stems directly from key recommendations handed to the government by the Otumfuo Mediation Committee in December 2025, an intervention that successfully reignited peacebuilding and stabilization efforts in the region.
Reflecting on the heavy toll of the past unrest, the President highlighted how years of hostility held back essential public services and derailed critical local infrastructure, including the stalled Tamli Dam project.

With calm now restored, the administration is determined to make up for lost time and ensure the area reclaims its economic momentum.
“Government will work to revive stalled projects and ensure the area receives its fair share of national development,” the President emphasized.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson will chair the newly formed committee tasked with executing the revitalisation strategy. Joining him on the panel are prominent local leaders and lawmakers: Mahama Ayariga (MP for Bawku Central), His Royal Majesty Cletus Abugri (Chief of Tempane), Akamugri Donatus Atanga (Upper East Regional Minister), and Dr. Thomas Winsum Anabah (MP for Garu).
