NPP Charges Mahama to complete Bolga–Bawku–Pulmako Road
…….Says 95% of Work Was Completed Under Akufo-Addo
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has challenged the government of President John Dramani Mahama to urgently complete the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmako road, claiming that 95 per cent of the project had been completed under the previous NPP administration.
The party says completing the remaining five per cent of the road would provide significant relief to residents and road users, while improving transportation, boosting economic activities and strengthening connectivity across the region.
The NPP’s Upper East Regional Communications Director, Dr Samuel Akonga, made the call during a press briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at Kulaa, near a bridge along the road.
He said the demand was not driven by partisan interests but by the need to accelerate development in the Upper East Region, where the road has remained a major concern for residents and motorists.
“We are gathered here as a political party, the New Patriotic Party, in the Upper East Region, to drum home the need for the NDC government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, to complete this road. This call is not about the NPP; it is about the development of the Upper East Region as a whole,” Dr Akonga stated.
He recalled that the road project was awarded in June 2016 under the NDC administration, with the contractor reportedly moving to the site on December 7, 2016.

According to him, the NPP government subsequently advanced the project from zero to 95 per cent completion, leaving the current administration with only five per cent of the work to finish.
“As we stand here today, you know that the NPP took the construction of this road from zero per cent to 95 per cent. So, what is left for this NDC government to do is just five per cent. Ask yourself: for the past two years in government, you have not been able to complete the road,” he said.
Dr Akonga expressed disappointment that the project remained unfinished, arguing that its completion should be a priority for the government, given the road’s importance to residents, traders and other road users.
He also questioned why the road had not been completed despite being used regularly by several Members of Parliament from the region.
Acknowledging the NPP’s limited electoral fortunes in the Upper East Region, where the party currently holds no parliamentary seats, Dr Akonga maintained that political considerations should not prevent residents from demanding development from the government of the day.
“The NPP, as a party, does not get massive votes in the Upper East Region. As we speak, the party has zero parliamentary seats in the region. But you all know that to whom much is given, much is expected,” he said.
He urged residents to hold the government accountable for its development commitments, stressing that the need for infrastructure should transcend party affiliations.
“We are calling on the good people of the Upper East Region to do the needful. You were not born into the NDC to be deceived. We are calling on this government to develop the Upper East Region,” Dr Akonga added.
He further argued that the NPP had demonstrated its commitment to regional development whenever it had the opportunity to govern, despite receiving relatively limited electoral support in the area.
The briefing was attended by NPP communications officers from various constituencies, constituency executives and party members, led by Dr Akonga.
The party is urging the Mahama administration to prioritise the completion of the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmako road, which it says is critical to easing movement, supporting commercial activities and improving access between communities in the Upper East Region.
