One Year On: Prez Mahama Pays Tribute to 'Departed 8', Calls for Selfless Service to Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday led the nation in commemorating the first anniversary of the tragic military helicopter crash of August 6, 2025, paying tribute to the eight Ghanaians who lost their lives in service to the country.

Speaking at the National Inter-Faith Memorial Service in Accra, President Mahama described remembrance as a national obligation, stressing that the true way to honour the fallen is through responsible leadership, selfless service, compassion and an unwavering commitment to protecting those who dedicate their lives to serving Ghana.

“Remembrance is both a duty and a measure of our national character,” the President said, urging Ghanaians to honour the memory of the departed not only with prayers but also by upholding the values for which they lived and served.

Extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, President Mahama assured them that the nation continues to stand with them in their grief and remembrance.

He said the enduring legacy of the “Departed 8” would continue to inspire future generations to place duty above self-interest and serve the country with integrity.

“The legacy of the ‘Departed 8’ will forever inspire generations to place duty above self-interest and serve Ghana with integrity,” he stated.

The National Inter-Faith Memorial Service brought together Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, senior government officials, the Ghana Armed Forces High Command, religious leaders, traditional authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, the bereaved families and other distinguished guests.

The solemn ceremony marked one year since the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of the eight dedicated public servants, with prayers offered for their eternal rest and renewed calls for national unity, sacrifice and service to Ghana.
