Either You Work Hard or You Go- Mahama Warns Appointees
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to ministers, deputy ministers, chief executives, board members and other political appointees to uphold discipline, accountability and effective leadership in the discharge of their duties.
The warning comes amid recent changes to the government’s leadership structure, including the latest ministerial reshuffle, the dissolution of selected boards of state institutions and an impending reshuffle of chief executives.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, the President said the changes reflected his determination to strengthen institutional leadership, improve coordination and ensure that all government appointees remained aligned with the administration’s policies and priorities.
“Ministers are hereby reminded of the President’s firm resolve to maintain discipline, accountability and effective leadership across all sectors of Government,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the President expects all political appointees to conduct themselves with integrity and diligence while respecting established administrative procedures.
“The President expects all Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chief Executives, Board members and other political appointees to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, diligence, humility and respect for established administrative procedures,” it stated.
Dr Callistus Mahama further warned that the government would not tolerate conduct that undermines cohesion, institutional authority or the effective implementation of government policies.
“Conduct that undermines governmental cohesion, institutional authority or the effective implementation of Government policy will not be tolerated,” the statement cautioned.
The President also reminded his appointees that their positions are not entitlements but a responsibility to serve the Ghanaian people.
“All appointees are reminded that public office is a privilege and an opportunity to serve the Ghanaian people,” the statement said.
Dr Mahama said the performance of government appointees across all sectors would continue to be assessed, with the President prepared to take further action where necessary to protect the effectiveness and integrity of his administration.
“Performance across all sectors will continue to be assessed, and the President will take any further action necessary to safeguard the integrity, effectiveness and responsiveness of his Administration,” he said.
The statement urged all appointees to cooperate with one another and remain committed to delivering on the government’s mandate.
“All appointees are expected to cooperate and commit as we work together to deliver the Government’s mandate and improve the lives of the Ghanaian people,” it added.
The warning follows a series of changes by President Mahama aimed at reshaping the leadership of government ministries, departments, agencies and state-owned institutions, with further changes expected in the leadership of some state enterprises.
