The Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi West, Hon. Eric Afful, has assured his constituents and Ghanaians at large of his unwavering commitment to excellence as he takes up a new role in the ECOWAS Parliament.

Hon. Afful, a four-term MP since entering Parliament in 2015 through a by-election following the passing of Hon. John Gyetuah, was recently appointed as one of Ghana’s eight representatives to the ECOWAS Parliament, a sub-regional legislative body of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Speaking in an interview with ExpressNewsGhana, Hon. Afful expressed profound gratitude to God, his constituents, and the leadership of Ghana’s Parliament for the opportunity.

He emphasized that the appointment was not only a personal milestone but also a recognition of his years of hard work, particularly in economic and development matters.

“This appointment is not by accident. Since 2015, my people have supported me through four consecutive terms, and I believe the work I have done in Parliament, especially as Chair of the Economy and Development Committee, has earned me this honour. I am deeply grateful,” he said.

Ghana’s ECOWAS Parliament Delegation

The Ghanaian delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament will be led by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan. Other members include: Hon. Patricia Appiagyei – Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Hon. Ayii Laadi Ayamba, Hon. Eric Afful, Hon. Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi and Hon. Bryan Acheampong, whiles Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah serves as an observer.

These members will represent Ghana in the 115-member ECOWAS Parliament, which draws five or more members from each of the 15 ECOWAS member states.

The Parliament is a key institution for regional dialogue, with oversight and advisory responsibilities in peace and security, economic integration, and human rights across West Africa.

Hon. Afful, who holds a strong background in economics, pledged to use his expertise to advocate for robust economic policies, trade development, and social welfare improvements across the sub-region.

“I chair the Economy and Development Committee in Ghana’s Parliament and have contributed extensively to debates on finance and trade. At the ECOWAS level, I’ll continue in this capacity—speaking on issues such as economic integration, social development, education, health, and sanitation. I’m committed to driving policies that benefit not only Ghanaians but all West Africans.”

On concerns about language barriers, particularly between Anglophone and Francophone countries, the Amenfi West MP was confident that it would not hinder his work.

“ECOWAS has systems in place for real-time translation. Whether it’s English or French being spoken, delegates receive translations through headsets. Language will not be a barrier to any committed member,” he explained.

The ECOWAS Parliament serves as a platform for promoting democratic principles, regional integration, and human rights among its member states. Though it currently has consultative and advisory powers, discussions continue on granting it full legislative authority in the near future.

Hon. Eric Afful’s appointment adds to his growing portfolio as a respected voice in Parliament and a rising figure in West African politics.

His assurance to his constituents and the country underscores a broader national ambition: to see Ghana’s leadership continue to shine on the international stage.
