Speaker Bagbin Rallies Global Parliament to Anchor Democracy in Peace and Justice
The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a clarion call to global legislative bodies to move beyond rhetoric and adopt deliberate actions that nurture hope, secure lasting peace, and guarantee justice for all citizens.
Addressing the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Turkey, the Speaker identified these three elements as the indispensable pillars required to support sustainable development and social stability in the modern era.
He characterized hope not merely as an abstract emotion, but as a tangible reflection of public confidence in governance systems that prioritize inclusive growth, safeguard livelihoods, and expand opportunities for the younger generation.
During the presentation of Ghana’s national statement, the Speaker argued that true peace is far more than the mere absence of conflict.
He maintained that for peace to be enduring, it must be firmly rooted in the principles of equity and supported by resilient institutional frameworks.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin underscored the unique position of parliaments in this mission, noting that they serve as the primary vehicle for translating the aspirations of the people into enforceable laws and robust accountability mechanisms.
He cited Ghana’s proactive approach to parliamentary oversight in environmental protection and social welfare as evidence of how legislative bodies can drive meaningful national progress.
Despite highlighting Ghana’s reputation for democratic stability, the Speaker offered a candid assessment of the domestic hurdles that persist.
He admitted that the nation still grapples with significant challenges, including economic disparities, youth unemployment, and the degradation of natural resources.
Furthermore, he alerted the assembly to emerging threats that jeopardize institutional integrity, such as the rise of misinformation, cybersecurity breaches, and the widening digital divide that prevents equal access to transformative technologies.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin pointed to ongoing efforts within Ghana to bridge these gaps, specifically mentioning state interventions in education and judicial reforms designed to bring justice closer to the ordinary citizen.
He emphasized that the survival of future generations depends on the collective political will of current leaders to build societies that are not only peaceful but inherently just.
