Parts of Accra and Eastern Regions to Face Water Disruptions

——as GWL Plans to Shut Down Kpong Treatment Plant for Three-Day Pipeline Maintenance

Residents and businesses across the eastern part of Greater Accra and parts of the Eastern Region are expected to experience temporary water supply interruptions from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8, 2026, as Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) undertakes major maintenance works on the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines.

The planned exercise will involve the isolation and replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema as part of the company’s proactive infrastructure maintenance programme aimed at improving the reliability, efficiency and long-term sustainability of water supply.

According to Ghana Water Ltd, routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections that require urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures, reduce water losses and improve the overall performance of the transmission system.

To facilitate the maintenance works, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down while engineers replace five sections of the transmission pipelines.

During the three-day exercise, customers supplied by the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience interruptions in water supply and reduced water pressure.

The affected areas include Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, the entire Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities.

Other affected areas include Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns.
Ghana Water Ltd assured customers that its engineers and technical teams would work around the clock throughout the maintenance period to complete the replacement works within schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.

“The replacement of the deteriorated pipeline sections will significantly reduce the incidence of pipeline bursts, minimize emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and enhance the long-term reliability of water supply to customers in Tema and the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region,” the company emphasized.

The company appealed to residents in the affected communities to store adequate quantities of water before the commencement of the maintenance works and to use available water judiciously during the interruption.

GWL also urged hospitals, health facilities and other essential service providers to make the necessary contingency arrangements, adding that water tankers would be deployed where feasible to support selected critical institutions during the maintenance period.

While expressing regret over the inconvenience the exercise may cause, the company described the intervention as a necessary investment in safeguarding one of Ghana’s most strategic water transmission systems.

“Ghana Water Ltd remains committed to providing safe, reliable and sustainable potable water to the people of Ghana and appreciates the understanding, cooperation and patience of all customers during this important maintenance exercise,” the statement said.

The company added that it would provide regular updates on the progress of the maintenance works through its official communication channels and notify the public immediately after normal water supply has been been fully restored.
