MP for Amenfi Central Appeals for Urgent National Response as Floods Displace Over 1,500 Households
The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, , has issued an urgent appeal for government intervention and national support following devastating floods that have displaced more than 1,500 households across Samreboi and surrounding communities in the Western Region.
In a statement describing the situation as a “humanitarian catastrophe,” the MP said days of relentless rainfall had caused widespread flooding across the Amenfi West, Amenfi Central and Amenfi East districts, leaving thousands of residents homeless and vulnerable.
According to her, floodwaters have submerged homes, destroyed personal belongings and farmlands, cut off access routes, and brought economic activities in several communities to a standstill.
“We stand together today, brokenhearted, as we witness a humanitarian catastrophe in Samreboi and the entire Amenfi West, Amenfi Central, and Amenfi East districts in Ghana’s Western Region,” she stated.

The MP painted a grim picture of conditions on the ground, noting that many families have been forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge in temporary shelters, while others are sleeping in open spaces with limited access to food, clean water, healthcare, and other essential services.
“More than 1,500 households have been displaced. Parents and children are sleeping in the open, uncertain of where their next meal will come from. Businesses have shut down, roads have become impassable, and entire communities have been cut off,” she said.
She further disclosed that lives have been lost in the disaster, while many affected residents continue to face fear, uncertainty, and hardship as floodwaters persist across the Wassa enclave.
The flooding has severely affected transportation networks within the area, making it difficult for emergency responders and relief agencies to reach some of the hardest-hit communities.
Residents have also reported significant damage to homes, shops, farms, and other sources of livelihood.

While commending the Managing Director of Samartex Timber and Plywood for providing support to affected residents, the lawmaker emphasized that the magnitude of the crisis requires a coordinated national response.
“I commend the Managing Director of Samartex for his selfless leadership and support during this difficult period. However, individual efforts alone cannot address a disaster of this scale,” she stressed.
The Amenfi Central MP consequently appealed directly to President , Vice President , and key government institutions, including the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Education, to urgently mobilize resources to support affected communities.
She called for the immediate deployment of emergency relief items, medical teams, and engineering support to clear blocked roads and restore access to isolated settlements.
“We need roads cleared, food supplies, medical assistance, and a coordinated plan to save lives and rebuild communities. The suffering is immense, and urgent action is required,” she appealed.
Joana Gyan Cudjoe further urged Ghanaians, corporate organizations, civil society groups, faith-based institutions, and development partners to support ongoing relief efforts.
“This is not just Samreboi’s fight; it is Ghana’s fight. We must come together as one people to support our brothers and sisters in this moment of crisis,” she stated.
As humanitarian concerns continue to grow, particularly for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons living with disabilities, residents and local authorities are hoping for swift intervention to provide immediate relief and facilitate long-term reconstruction efforts.
The disaster has renewed concerns about flood preparedness and disaster management in flood-prone communities across the country, with stakeholders calling for sustainable measures to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events in the future.
