The Member of Parliament for Madina and Chairman of Human Rights Committee of Parliament, Hon Francis Xavier Sosu has called on parliament and the Ghana police services to support the family of a 14 years old girl allegedly defiled by 18 men within the Madina constituency.

According to him, the family and the community remained traumatized over the incident as the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the police services launched intensive investigation into the matter.

With an emergency statement on the floor of parliament, Hon Sosu said the 14-year-old girl is alleged to have been defiled by 18 different men, leaving her traumatized and pregnant.

“Mr. Speaker, my checks with the Madinah Divisional DOVVSU Commander of the Ghana Police Service confirms the facts the victim in question is actually 14 years and lives in Madinah.

“The girl was discovered pregnant by her parents and upon questioning, she said she had had sexual intercourse with 18 men on different occasions,” the MP said.

Hon Sosu, the Madinah DOVVSU has obtained a complainer statement from the parents of the victim as well as the victim’s statement and a medical report form was issued in respect to the complainant to send the victim to the hospital for examination and report.

He said, police preliminary investigation led to the arrest of two suspects and are in detention to assist the police investigation, while effort underway to get the remaining suspects arrested since the condition is a matter of defilement.

“Upon receiving the news and the briefing from the Divisional Commander of Police, Mr. Speaker, as someone who has been interested in fighting for the rights of children in this country, I have offered myself together with a team of lawyers to hold criminal watching briefs for and on behalf of this victim,” the MP added.

In addition to that, the MP said he has also engaged the Psychiatric Director of the Pantang Mental Hospital to provide psychological support for the victim.

“I have also requested the Medical Director of the Pantang Hospital to put together a team to provide urgent medical assistance and support to the victim and help deal with the trauma the victim may be suffering,”   he said.

Mr. Sosu said a team of lawyers has also been assembled to provide legal briefing to the victim in addition to police prosecution at the court.

“Mr. Speaker, upon receiving the news and briefing from the Divisional Commander and as someone who has been interested in matters of child welfare in Ghana over the years, I have volunteered to lead a team of lawyers from F-X Law and Associates to hold criminal brief for the victim,” the MP assured.

The MP reaffirmed his commitment to the interest of the constituents, stating, “I stand with the survivor and her family in this time of deep distress and pledge to support with medical care, counselling, and the requisite legal assistance the victim may require. I shall also work tirelessly with the authorities to pursue swift justice for the victim, and to protect every child in Madina.”
