The African Initiative for Journalism and Media (AfroMedia) has strongly condemned the systematic targeting and killing of journalists and media professionals in Gaza by the Israeli occupation.

According to reports from international organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), over 240 journalists and media professionals have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, with many others injured or arrest.

Provide Protection Mechanisms for Journalists

Offer preventive protection mechanisms for journalists, including logistical support and equipment necessary to work in conflict zones.

AfroMedia emphasized that the targeting of journalists is not only a human loss but also a damaging blow to press freedom, transparency, and people’s right to knowledge.

The initiative stressed that defending journalists means defending truth and justice, and safeguarding their lives is essential to ensuring future generations’ right to know what happened without distortion or concealment.

International Response

The United Nations has also expressed concern over the targeting of journalists in Gaza.

UN rights experts have condemned the killing and silencing of journalists, highlighting that targeted attacks and killings of journalists are war crimes.

The UN has called for independent investigations into every journalist’s killing and urged Israeli authorities to permit journalists to enter Gaza and safeguard their safety.
