The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 by a court, with one surety required. The bail was granted without justification.

Abronye’s lead counsel, Daniel Mantey Addo, confirmed the decision and revealed that his client’s health had worsened during detention.

According to him, the bail decision has brought some relief to Abronye, while the legal team works to satisfy the conditions to facilitate his immediate release.

The outspoken politician was arrested on September 8, 2025, on charges of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace. Police authorities indicated that the arrest followed comments Abronye made in public, which allegedly included unsubstantiated allegations against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the governing party.

The police argued that the remarks had the potential to incite unrest if left unchecked.

In a twist that has stirred political debate, it emerged that prior to his arrest, Abronye had filed applications for political asylum in at least eight countries.

These include Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, and Germany.

In those applications, Abronye cited persistent political persecution, threats to his personal safety, and the alleged misuse of state security powers by the current administration as reasons for seeking protection abroad.

The development has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters describing the arrest as politically motivated, while critics argue that his repeated inflammatory statements warranted legal scrutiny.

For now, Abronye remains under close observation as his lawyers finalize processes for his release, even as the substantive case against him makes its way through the courts.
