The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has issued a forceful defense of President John Dramani Mahama following the controversial decision by Lincoln University in Pennsylvania to rescind an honorary doctorate intended for the Ghanaian leader.

In a spirited official statement, the church described the university’s withdrawal not as a snub, but as a spiritual victory that validates the President’s commitment to his faith and national values.

The American institution reportedly withdrew the honor in protest of President Mahama’s firm stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently under consideration in Ghana’s Parliament.

While such a move might be seen as a diplomatic or academic embarrassment, the Assemblies of God leadership has flipped the narrative, asserting that being targeted for one’s moral convictions is a source of “joy unconfined” for the denomination.

The General Secretary of the Church, Rev. Ernest Birikorang, drew a direct parallel between the President’s current situation and the biblical experiences of the early Apostles. He cited Acts 5:41, noting that the President is essentially “rejoicing because he has been counted worthy of suffering disgrace” for his principles.

The church emphasized that Mahama’s unwavering position—which he has previously described as homosexuality being “scripturally forbidden” and culturally unacceptable—remains a point of immense pride for the congregation he belongs to.

Rev. Birikorang’s statement further serves as a clarion call to the church’s membership across the public and private sectors.

The leadership urged all congregants to view the President’s experience as a “spectacular example” of integrity, encouraging them to never compromise their spiritual or moral foundations regardless of international pressure or secular disdain.

The statement concluded with a call for intensive prayer within the wider Christian community.

The church is urging Ghanaians to remain steadfast in their efforts to steer the nation away from practices they deem sinful, specifically referencing the LGBTQ+ debate as a matter of significant spiritual consequence.

As the fallout from Lincoln University’s decision continues to spark debate across the Atlantic, the Assemblies of God has made it clear that, in their eyes, the President’s global “disdain” is a testament to his local and spiritual devotion.
