The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Gushegu, Hon. Abdul-Hafiz Adam, has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to urgently post more teachers to the municipality to address the severe shortage affecting effective teaching and learning.

Hon. Abdul-Hafiz made the appeal when he appeared before Parliament’s Subcommittee on Local Government on Thursday, October 9, 2025, in Accra.

He lamented that several schools in the municipality are severely understaffed, with some having only one teacher handling pupils from Kindergarten One through to Primary Six.

“This is not a good development. I personally visited the GES headquarters to formally appeal for more teachers to be posted to Gushegu,” the MCE stated.

According to him, the shortage is largely due to teachers from the southern part of the country requesting transfers after serving two to three years in the north.

He therefore urged GES to consider posting teachers trained in northern colleges to northern districts to ensure stability and continuity in the education system.

The MCE also briefed the committee on efforts being made under the President’s “Reset Agenda” to complete ongoing development projects in the municipality, noting that while several have been completed, others are still in progress.

On the issue of child marriage another major concern in the area—Hon. Abdul-Hafiz said the Assembly is adopting a two-pronged approach: education and enforcement.

“We are working with traditional leaders to educate communities that cultural practices contradicting the Constitution cannot be allowed. At the same time, we are taking punitive measures where persuasion fails,” he explained.

He revealed that some individuals are currently serving jail terms for child marriage offenses, emphasizing that the Assembly remains committed to protecting the rights of young girls and promoting education and development in the Gushegu Municipality.
