Frimpong-Manso Institute Calls for Swift Action to End Electoral Violence after Ablekuma North Chaos
The Frimpong-Manso Institute (FMI) has strongly condemned the violence and disorder that marred the recent Ablekuma North election re-run, calling for urgent action to safeguard Ghana’s democratic integrity.
In a press statement issued following a comprehensive review of the polls—closely monitored by FMI representatives across all 19 polling stations—the Institute described the violent incidents as a “blazing beacon,” warning of the potential for more serious crises if left unchecked.
“We strongly recommend that the verbal tirade be backed by a swift investigation and stringent application of the law against the perpetrators of these shameful acts,” the statement read.
FMI emphasized that the recent violence not only tarnishes Ghana’s democratic image but also sets a dangerous precedent for future elections, including the upcoming Akwatia by-election and the 2028 general elections.
“It is an imperative necessity for the Intelligence Community and Law Enforcement Agencies to collaborate effectively to prevent any spectre of violence at Akwatia. Proposed tight security measures must be matched with vigorous public education on electoral laws and the consequences of violating them,” the Institute added.
FMI also called on the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to demonstrate genuine commitment to peaceful elections by urging their supporters to respect the law and refrain from inciting or engaging in violence.
“Voting centres must not be turned into battlegrounds. Anyone who breaks the law—regardless of political affiliation—must face the full force of justice,” the statement stressed.
The Institute further urged the Electoral Commission and other state agencies to fully implement recommendations from past reports on electoral violence to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
“We reiterate that the nation cannot, should not, and dare not fail in the Akwatia by-election. Failure to ensure a credible and peaceful process there could spell doom for subsequent polls, especially Election 2028,” FMI warned.
FMI concluded its statement with a renewed call for collective responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect the sanctity of the ballot, and defend the country’s democratic values.
