UPSA Leadership Pays Courtesy Call on the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Friday, 30 January 2026, paid a distinguished courtesy call on His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and a revered alumnus of the University, at the Manhyia Palace.

The visit formed part of activities marking UPSA’s year-long 60th Anniversary celebrations and was undertaken to formally convey an invitation to His Royal Majesty to grace a forthcoming Ghana Business Leaders’ Conclave scheduled for May. The event is a flagship component of the University’s Diamond Jubilee programme and seeks to reflect on ethical leadership, governance, and national development, values closely aligned with the Asantehene’s lifelong commitment to education and institutional excellence.

The high-level delegation was led by the Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Harry L. K. Agbanu, and comprised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor; the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Selasi Asamoah; and the Registrar, Mrs. Lorraine B. Gyan. Other members of the delegation included the Director of Public Affairs, Ms Aba Lokko; the Director of Finance, Mr. Nicholas Adjei; the President of the Global Alumni Association of UPSA, Mr. Francis Dadzie; and Hon. Kan-Dapaah, an esteemed alumnus of the University.

Speaking on behalf of Management, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, conveyed the profound respect and gratitude of the University to His Majesty for his visionary leadership and enduring contribution to education in Ghana and beyond. He paid special tribute to the Asantehene’s pivotal role in the establishment of the University’s Otumfuo Centre for Traditional Leadership, describing it as a unique and enduring legacy that bridges academia and traditional governance. The Vice-Chancellor further acknowledged the wise counsel, encouragement, and moral support extended by His Majesty to UPSA’s leadership at critical moments in the University’s journey.

In his response, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II warmly welcomed the delegation and commended the Governing Council and Management of UPSA for their bold leadership, strategic foresight, and effective stewardship of the institution. He reflected with pride on the remarkable transformation of UPSA, from its origins as the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) to its current status as a fully-fledged public university with growing national and international recognition. His Majesty reaffirmed his personal commitment to the University and pledged his continued support for the Otumfuo Centre for Traditional Leadership.

The Asantehene subsequently accepted the invitation to be part of UPSA’s 60th Anniversary celebrations.

The courtesy call underscored the enduring bond between UPSA and one of its most illustrious alumni, and reaffirmed the University’s resolve to draw inspiration from exemplary leadership in advancing its mandate of scholarship with professionalism.
