Private Schools Association Criticizes Mahama Govt over Unfulfilled Placement Promise
The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has chastised the government led by President John Dramani Mahama for failing to honour key commitments made to private schools ahead of the 2024 elections.
Speaking at the Association’s 39th Biennial Conference in Bolgatanga on August 27, 2025, GNAPS President, Prof. Damascus Tuurosong, accused the government of backtracking on its campaign pledge to allocate 30% priority placement of qualified Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates to private schools.
“During the campaign, the NDC promised to give private schools 30% of priority placement into senior high schools. Unfortunately, what has been delivered is only 15%. This is a clear case of broken promises,” Prof. Tuurosong lamented.

Adding her voice, the Greater Accra Regional Chairperson of GNAPS, Dr. Aisha Asi Akrofi, expressed disappointment in the government’s handling of engagements with private school operators.
“We entered into discussions with the government before the 2024 elections with high hopes, but what we are seeing now is disheartening. The promises made to us have not been fulfilled,” she told the media.
Leaders of GNAPS have vowed to continue pressing the government to honour its commitments, stressing that the future of thousands of students in private schools is at stake.
