The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tatale/Sanguli, Hon. Mary Tagba, has assured farmers that the government remains committed to supporting them to feed the nation, stressing that “no farmer’s effort will go to waste.”

Hon Tagba gave the assurance when she addressed farmers and residents at Kogyili during the 41st National Farmers’ Day Celebration.

She underscored the importance of Farmers’ Day as a national platform to honour farmers whose hard work keeps the country fed. She warned that food insecurity would cripple the nation if farmers were not committed to their work.

For the first time in the History of the District farmers’ day, a woman was adjudged the best farmer, taking a big motorcycle, the other two women(the best tomato farmer and best onion farmer) picking sewing machines and farming items such as bags of fertilizer, Wellington, snap sack cutlasses

Speaking on the theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” Hon. Tagba said it reflects current global realities and reinforces the need for Ghana to strengthen home-grown agricultural interventions.

She noted that global crises, including wars, natural disasters, pandemics, and violent extremism, continue to threaten food supply chains worldwide.

She emphasized that the government will assist farmers to adopt modern and smarter farming techniques to achieve food security and sufficiency, adding that citizens must patronize locally produced foods to boost the national economy.

Major Government Interventions

Hon. Tagba outlined several ongoing government programmes aimed at transforming the agricultural sector and supporting rural farmers.

According to her, under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP), new dams are being constructed, and old ones rehabilitated to support all-year-round farming and fish production. She appealed to beneficiary communities to protect the dams.

She added that improved road networks will reduce post-harvest losses and ease the transportation of farm produce to markets.

The DCE revealed that the government has distributed several bags of fertilizer to farmers to cushion them against rising input costs caused by harsh climatic conditions.

She urged beneficiaries not to sell the fertilizer but use it for farming, promising that more supplies are on the way.

As part of efforts to promote sustainable poultry farming, the government has launched the “Akoko Nketen Nketen” project to supply chicks to farmers. She said the initiative will boost incomes, enhance nutrition, and strengthen the district’s local economy.

Hon. Tagba announced plans for Farm Mechanization Centres that will provide affordable tractor services and enable farmers to acquire tractors on flexible payment terms.

The Big Push Project

Under the Big Push Project, the district is set to benefit from new roads, bridges, schools, health facilities, and a 24-hour economy market.

Sod-cutting ceremonies have been held for boreholes, educational facilities, and health infrastructure in communities including Tuugbini, Tikasarini, Sabonjida, Kogyili, and Christian Heritage School – Tatale.

The DCE emphasized that development thrives only in peaceful communities. She commended the District Security Committee for its vigilance in addressing chieftaincy and land-related disputes and urged the youth to avoid being used by misguided individuals to foment trouble.

Hon. Tagba expressed concern about rising drug abuse among youth nationwide. She said the Assembly has directed Members to compile data on youth engaged in drug use to facilitate counselling and rehabilitation interventions.

She reminded the public that Ghana observed World AIDS Day on December 1 under the theme “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response,” with the sub-theme “Africa Unites against AIDS.” She advised residents to abstain from risky behaviours to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS.

Hon. Tagba congratulated all award-winning farmers and encouraged those who did not win to continue working hard for future recognition.
