The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as West Africa’s sole candidate for the position of African Union (AU) Chairperson in 2027.
The significant endorsement, which places President Mahama at the forefront of the region’s continental aspirations, was announced following the Council’s ninety-fifth ordinary session, which recently concluded in Abuja. The Council of Ministers has formally agreed to forward the recommendation to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for final adoption this coming Sunday, December 14, 2025.
A Unified Regional Position
In a statement released on Friday, ECOWAS expressed deep appreciation to all member states for their strong consensus and for rallying behind Ghana’s candidacy. The regional body specifically cited Ghana’s “longstanding contributions to regional cooperation” and its “respected international profile” as key factors underpinning the endorsement.

The Council emphasized that the nomination of President Mahama is a direct reflection of a unified regional position, which is intended to significantly strengthen ECOWAS’ influence in continental decision-making processes at the AU.
”ECOWAS is committed to working in a concerted manner to support candidates of Member States or their nationals in international organizations, including the African Union, to ensure that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected,” the statement noted.
Awaits Final Adoption
By reaffirming its determination to back qualified candidates from member states, ECOWAS aims to bolster the region’s presence and voice in global institutions.

ECOWAS CHAMBER

The recommendation now moves forward for adoption by the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. Their formal approval is the final step required to officially establish President Mahama as the region’s sole and official candidate for the prestigious AU Chairmanship in 2027.
