The Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) has launched Gurune-language versions of the biblical books of Ruth and Jonah, marking a major step in expanding access to Scripture among Gurune-speaking communities in the Upper East Region.

The launch ceremony, held on December 14, 2025, at the Redemption Assemblies of God Church auditorium in Bolgatanga, was themed “We heard them speak in our own language.” It drew clergy, church members, community leaders, and residents from Gurune-speaking areas.

Speaking at the event, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Ghana, Very Rev. Dr. John Kwesi Addo Jnr., emphasized the importance of mother-tongue translations in deepening understanding of Scripture. He noted that hearing God’s Word in one’s own language enhances clarity and personal connection without the need for interpretation.

Dr. Addo also explained that the translations were produced using the new Gurune orthography, an updated writing system aimed at improving readability and comprehension for contemporary readers.

According to the BSG, Ruth and Jonah were selected for the launch due to their strong moral and spiritual themes, including obedience, faithfulness, redemption, and God’s compassion—messages considered relevant for personal devotion and communal worship.

As part of the initiative, the Society announced plans to distribute about 50,000 copies of Bibles to students to promote Bible literacy and encourage early engagement with Scripture.

The event was attended by religious leaders from various denominations, community elders, youth groups, and church members, many of whom described the launch as a historic milestone for worship, teaching, and evangelism in Gurune speaking communities.

The launch reinforces the Bible Society of Ghana’s commitment to translating and distributing the Bible in local Ghanaian languages to ensure broader access and inclusion across the country.
