rCOMSDEP Steps Up Responsible Mining Campaign in Savannah Region

The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), an initiative of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has intensified its campaign to promote responsible and sustainable mining with a series of community engagements in the Savannah Region.

Community Forum at Tuntumbawura’s Palace

As part of the outreach, a stakeholder forum was held at the forecourt of the Tuntumbawura’s Palace, drawing representatives from Camp, Cruff, and Tuntumba communities.

The event served as a platform to educate local miners on the benefits of the Responsible Cooperative Mining Scheme, the importance of legal permits, and the long-term gains of sustainable mining practices.

Community members voiced frustrations over a large-scale mining company that has operated a concession in the area since 2016 without providing any visible development benefits.

According to participants, this has discouraged many small-scale miners from pursuing legal permits, fueling discontent in the area.

In response, Ing. Frank Asare Pedro, National Coordinator of rCOMSDEP, urged miners to embrace the cooperative licensing process, stressing that legalizing operations was critical to fighting illegal mining and its devastating environmental impact.

“The cooperative model provides a structured pathway for miners to operate legally, access resources, and contribute to sustainable development in their communities,” Ing. Pedro explained.

Dakrupe Engagement with Artisanal Miners

The sensitization drive also reached Dakrupe, where rCOMSDEP officials engaged the leadership of the Association of Artisanal Miners.

The sensitization centered on strategies to support artisanal miners to transition into formal, responsible mining.

The miners welcomed the initiative but appealed for equipment support—particularly pumping machines—to boost productivity.

They pledged their commitment to working with rCOMSDEP to advance safe and responsible practices in Dakrupe.

A Vision for Sustainable Mining

Through these grassroots engagements, rCOMSDEP is reinforcing government’s commitment to transforming mining into a driver of local economic development rather than a source of environmental destruction.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry’s broader vision of building a responsible, inclusive, and sustainable mining sector that protects the environment while creating opportunities for mining communities nationwide.
