Philanthropist Boosts Draught Competition in Upper East with GH₵5,000 Support
The Upper East Region’s draught fraternity received a major boost during this year’s Salah celebrations after the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Drafts Players Association, Alhaji Ibrahim, donated GH₵5,000 to support a regional competition in Bolgatanga.
The sponsorship, described as part of his Zakat charitable giving, was aimed at reviving the sport and increasing participation among young people in northern Ghana.
Speaking after the competition, organizer of the Upper East Regional Draft Association, Charles Yin Sabato, revealed that the gesture came after Alhaji Ibrahim observed the declining number of organized draught competitions in the northern part of the country.
“Alhaji Ibrahim decided to support the tournament because he realized that draught competitions are rarely organized in the north. His intention is to revive the game and encourage more youth to actively participate in the sport,” Mr. Sabato stated.
The highly competitive Salah tournament took place at the Children’s Park in Bolgatanga and attracted teams from Tilli, Sandema, Navrongo, and Bolgatanga, creating an atmosphere of excitement and intense rivalry among participants.

At the end of the competition, the Navrongo Draft Team emerged champions and walked away with the ultimate cash prize of GH₵800. The first runners-up received GH₵600, while the third-placed team took home GH₵400. The fourth-placed side was also rewarded with GH₵200 for their efforts.
Participants and spectators praised the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could help restore interest in draught playing across the Upper East Region and beyond.
