Ghana’s Parliament, under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is taking part in the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) currently underway in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The high-level gathering, hosted by the Parliament of Barbados and the CPA Barbados Branch, brings together over 500 Speakers, Presiding Officers, Parliamentarians, and key decision-makers from across the Commonwealth.

Opening on Sunday, October 5, the week-long conference is being held under the theme “The Commonwealth: A Global Partner”. Deliberations will focus on strengthening parliamentary democracy, leveraging technology and artificial intelligence to modernize legislatures, addressing the health impacts of climate change, and rebuilding public trust in parliaments.

The event is hosted by the CPA President (2024–2025), Senator Hon. Reginald Farley, JP, President of the Senate of Barbados, alongside Hon. Arthur Holder, Speaker of the House of Assembly of Barbados, and the Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP.

The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) emphasized that the annual conference offers a unique platform for legislators to exchange ideas, share best practices, and strengthen cooperation across member parliaments.

“This CPA Conference offers the opportunity to bring together MPs and key stakeholders to share and exchange ideas and best practices reinforcing the fact that we live in an interconnected world with shared responsibilities,” he said.

In addition to the main sessions, the 68th CPC features several side events including: The 41st CPA Small Branches Conference, the 9th Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Conference, meetings of the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD) network, the 2025 CPA General Assembly and CPA Executive Committee meetings and The 59th Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SOCATT) meetings

The conference will also witness elections for various CPA leadership positions, including the Chairs of the CWP and CPwD networks, CPA Treasurer, and Vice-Chairperson. The 3rd Lifaka Lecture and the presentation of the 2025 Commonwealth Parliamentarian of the Year Awards will also be held.

This year’s conference marks the second time Barbados has hosted the event, following the 35th CPC in 1989. Speaker Bagbin previously led Ghana’s Parliament to successfully host the 66th CPC in Accra two years ago.
