Ghana’s First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor Appointed to P IPU Resolution Drafting Committee
In a significant move for West African diplomacy, the First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, has been officially endorsed to serve on the Resolution Drafting Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
This high-profile appointment occurred during the 152nd IPU Assembly in Istanbul, Türkiye, following a formal nomination by the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament and current President of the African Geopolitical Group of the IPU.
The nomination process highlighted a unified front for the continent, as Speaker Bagbin also moved for the inclusion of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa on the same committee.
Both candidates received the unanimous backing of the African Geopolitical Group, a gesture that parliamentary observers suggest reflects a “strong confidence in their leadership and their ability to represent the continent’s legislative interests on the global stage.”

Beyond the committee appointments, Speaker Bagbin utilized the assembly in Istanbul as a platform for intensive parliamentary diplomacy.
On the sidelines of the main event, the Speaker engaged in a marathon of bilateral meetings with high-level delegations from Australia, Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Qatar, Turkey, and Ukraine.
These discussions were aimed at transcending traditional legislative talk, focusing instead on “strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing parliamentary diplomacy, and deepening collaboration in key areas including trade, investment, and regional development.”
Throughout these sessions, the Ghanaian delegation emphasized that the path toward global stability is paved through mutual respect and shared economic goals.
A central theme of the engagements was the necessity of African solidarity, with delegates stressing “the importance of addressing shared challenges such as security concerns, economic resilience, and sustainable development” through a unified voice.
By securing a seat on the Resolution Drafting Committee, Ghana is now positioned at the very heart of the IPU’s policy-making process.
The move reaffirms the nation’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that advance “collective efforts toward peace, stability, and prosperity across Africa and beyond.”

As the 152nd Assembly continues, Ghana’s presence in Istanbul serves as a clear signal of the country’s growing influence in shaping the international legislative agenda.
