International Women’s Day : AWLN Ghana Demands Full Implementation of Affirmative Action Law
On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2026, the Ghana chapter of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) has issued a stirring call for the full and rigorous implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act.
Under the global theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” the network emphasized that the era of legislative promises must now transition into a period of tangible results for women across the nation.
In a press statement signed by the Ghana chapter Chairperson, Dr. Charity Binka, the network acknowledged that while the passage of the Affirmative Action remains a historic milestone for the country, the law’s mere existence does not guarantee progress.
Dr. Binka highlighted that the true measure of success lies in effective implementation, heightened public awareness, and institutional accountability to ensure that rights are translated into real-world opportunities for women and girls.
The network is advocating for a multi-faceted approach to gender equality that goes beyond political representation.
This includes a robust strengthening of the justice system to better protect women from gender-based violence and discrimination, alongside strategic investments in girls’ education and digital inclusion.
AWLN Ghana maintains that equipping young women for the evolving global economy is essential for long-term national development.
The statement further underscored the necessity of economic empowerment, calling for improved access to finance and equal opportunities within the labor market for female entrepreneurs.

Dr. Binka noted that achieving these goals requires a collective effort from the government, traditional authorities, civil society, and the private sector to dismantle harmful social norms that continue to hinder progress.
The Chapter however reaffirmed its dedication to mentoring the next generation of female leaders.
It stressed that the time for rhetoric has passed, urging all stakeholders to act decisively to ensure that no woman or girl is left behind in Ghana’s pursuit of inclusive development.
